Falls
C4I Patient Falls Subgroup
Preventing patients from slips, trips and falls is a top priority. A number of strategies to prevent falls have been put into place and help John Dempsey Hospital reach the goal of safest
hospital in the state. Patients can expect:
- Assessment when admitted to better meet their needs.
- Monitoring from a sitting position to standing to determine balance.
- Walking with a healthcare provider to evaluate gait.
- Care plans that include the use of special hospital beds that
lower to 16 inches above floor level.
- Night lights on hospital beds to ensure safer movement in low light.
- A yellow bracelet for those at greater risk to fall, and a risk-of-fall symbol at their bedside to help staff identify them and provide additional monitoring.
- Clean surroundings.
- Clear hallways and walkways.
- Nearby call bells to reach staff.
Patient falls are reviewed to determine the cause and corrective measures are taken where circumstances permit.
